Spring Series: Races 4 & 5 [Posted by Kate on Mon 11th Apr 05]
This weekend the race officer ran two races, which was somewhat of a surprise for some competitors!
Race 4
We had the best start of the pack on the line at the gun. Again glorious sunshine and after a few cross tacks we rounded the windward mark first and following a few very good tactical decisions we never looked back.
Race 5
However race 5 was a different matter. Having decided to change to the number 2 with 4 mins to go to the start, we were 30 seconds late with a lot of catching up to do - first beat went well and we were 2nd round the windward mark but after a quick spinnaker hoist it was found to be inside the jib. Once this was sorted out we started to gain and put more pressure on the leading boat, fellow Impala Celerity. These positions stayed the same but at the next windward mark we gybe set compared to their bear away set, and this time they cocked up! We were neck and neck coming into the leward mark and we opted for the more risky manouvre of gybe drop which paid off. Although we finished on the water ahead, Celerity got us by 10 secs on corrected time.
