The regatta was started with free rum and coke all night - what a great way to start a regatta - pissed! First race came with 35 knots over the deck and a decision about which sail. The other impala had her no.2 up so we went for it too! A lot was learnt in the first race first know Torquay bay well and where the bends are!! So with a 4th under our belt we were ready for the challenge. After a good start and full flattener, cunningham and outhaul on plus full hiking from our very light crew we were up there at the front just behind the other Impala. The crew got very disappointed when the race wasn't shortened so Haribo came to the rescue and for the next beat all that could be heard was Steve - "tack...tack...tack" and Dan "I haven't finished them yet....give me a minute....I've dropped one...!" With Haribo to the rescue we overtook the Impala but unfortunately not by enough and we were tied 2nd. However, in the bar (on free WKD - pissed again!!) we found out that their crew were a whole 25 stone heavier than us light younguns!!

Day 2 dawned and it was lightish - 20 knots!! This day went very well for us as it was tactical and we notched up a 2nd and 1st so went into the last day 1 point behind. That evening was the Scalextric grand prix where Dan finished 2nd to a GIRL!! And we had to pay a whole £1 for a beer all night!

Day 3 came and blew and rained and we sat around and sat around and then were sent out where there was suddenly only a force 3 left behind but unfortunately it was a processional course and the Impala got away so we ended up 2nd overall but a very creditable result. We came third team too.

Thanks to everyone especially the parents for letting us hooligans sleep on their boats and for escorting me and Steve safely there and back (even with engine failure!!), and to Torquay Marina for the use of their shower facilities...

Let’s hope we can beat them next year and show them light people really can beat the hefties!!
